Hatfield Leads Women’s Hoops to 73-60 Win

The Randolph-Macon women’s basketball team hosted Averett for their first matchup as conference opponents on Saturday afternoon as a part of Back to the Hive. The Yellow Jackets put on a showcase for the alumni, pulling away with a 73-60 win.

The Basics:

Score: Randolph-Macon 73, Averett 60

Location/Venue: Ashland, Va./Randolph-Macon College/Crenshaw Gym

Records: Randolph-Macon (14-5, 11-2 ODAC), Averett (4-15, 2-10 ODAC)

How it Happened:

  • The Yellow Jackets started fast, opening a 16-2 lead in the blink of an eye. Thanks to a pair of threes by sophomore Marisa Ziegler (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) and fifth-year senior Cheridan Hatfield (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial). The scoring didn’t stop there, as RMC kept pace to hold a 24-7 lead after one quarter.
  • The scoring didn’t stop for the Yellow Jackets as Hatfield hit her fourth three of the half in as many attempts. RMC pushed out to a 20-point lead before the Cougars found a spark to cut the lead to 15 at half, 40-25.
  • The Yellow Jackets opened the lead to 19 seven minutes into the second half, and ended the frame on a buzzer beating layup on junior Catherine Kagey’s (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) eighth point of the quarter.
  • Senior Devan Conrad (Parkville, Md./St. Paul’s School for Girls) began the fourth quarter with a give-and-go with Ziegler to immediately push the lead to 20. RMC had the largest lead of the game at 21 with six and a half minutes to play and cruised to the finish to win 73-60.

By the Numbers:

  • The Yellow Jackets had their highest offensive output of the year, scoring 73 points, shooting 46% from the field and 40% from three-point land. The 46% from the field is the second best percentage this season, behind a 47% performance against Guilford.
  • Cheridan Hatfield finished with 19 points and eight assists, leading RMC in both categories. She was efficient from the field, shooting 70% (7-10) and 4-4 from deep.
  • Catherine Kagey had another great night, scoring 15 points to couple with seven rebounds. She also swatted three shots on the inside.
  • Marisa Ziegler was the final RMC player in double-figures, posting 11 points on 4-5 shooting including two triples.
  • RMC forced 21 turnovers and had 18 assists. Their seventh time this season with 18+ assists.
