Richmond County Museum issued the following announcement on Sept. 9.
The Warsaw Shopping Center was built by the Northern Neck Corporation (headed by Mr. and Mrs. Dabney Overton) in 1960. The first two buildings constructed were for the A&P Tea Company and ABC Store. They required more space to accommodate the volume of customers they were receiving.
The new A&P store moved from its former location in the Coggin Building to its new location in December 1960. Built in an "Early-American style," the store featured a "Magic Carpet Door, parcel checking stations, 100% self-service meat department, and a spacious, lighted free parking lot. It was also air conditioned. By 1966, the Ben Franklin Variety Store and Warsaw Drug Store had also moved into the shopping center. In later years, it was coined "The Bottoms" and was home to Gannon Technology. The former Warsaw Shopping Center was demolished in 2018 to provide much-needed green space and stormwater management for the town.
"The Bottoms" is now "The Bounds" park. It features a small pond surrounded by sidewalks and provides access to the nearby Enchanted Forest. Have we mentioned it is within short walking distance of the Richmond County Museum? Interesting! Today is Friday, we're open, and the weather is beautiful! So take that stroll in the newest park in Warsaw (sans fishing pole) and swing by for a visit!
