Anthony Scores 32 to Lead #1 R-MC Men’s Hoops past #13 Emory

Randolph - Macon College issued the following announcement on Nov. 19

Senior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) scored a career-high 32 points as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team defeated No. 13 Emory 88-74 on Friday evening on Day 1 of the Great Lakes Invitational.

How it Happened:

  • Anthony had the first three buckets of the game and junior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) capped a 12-0 start for the Yellow Jackets with a pair of three throws and a jumper. The Eagles cut it to eight at 16-8 before a three-pointer by Anthony capped another 12-0 spurt as R-MC led 28-8 with 9:20 left in the first half. A jumper and a three-point play by senior David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) pushed the advantage to 22 at 33-11 with 8:10 remaining in the period. A jumper by Anthony with 2:30 left gave the Yellow Jackets a 44-21 lead. Anthony sank a jump shot just before the horn as R-MC led 46-29 at the break. Anthony went 9 for 10 from the floor for 19 points in the opening half. Funderburg had 11 points and seven rebounds.
  • Junior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) had three baskets as part of a 6-2 run to start the second half as the Yellow Jackets took a 52-31 lead with 18:25 remaining. Emory scored 11 straight points to cut the deficit to 10 before a jumper by Anthony stopped the rally, giving R-MC a 54-42 advantage. Sophomore Will Coble (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day) connected on a pair of treys as the Yellow Jackets led 64-49 midway through the second period. A triple by Anthony gave R-MC a 69-55 edge with 7:15 left. Another three-pointer by Anthony put the Yellow Jackets on top 80-62 with 3:45 remaining. Talbert put an exclamation point on the game with a dunk with 14 seconds left to make the final 88-74.
By The Numbers:

  • The Yellow Jackets had four players score in double figures. Along with 32 by Anthony, Funderburg had a career-best 18, Mallory finished with 14 and Talbert tallied 12.
  • Anthony went 14 for 21 from the floor and hit four of eight from beyond the arc.
  • R-MC shot a season-best 56.5% from the floor (35-62) and hit 11 of 12 free throws for 91.7%. Mallory was a perfect 6 for 6 from the charity stripe.
  • The Yellow Jackets had a 34-28 edge on the glass. Funderburg topped the team with nine rebounds.
  • Anthony finished with five assists.
For The Record:

  • The Yellow Jackets extended their win streak to 21 games.
  • Mallory had three blocks to give him 108 for his career, the sixth-highest total in program history.
  • Anthony had a pair of steals to give him 194 for his career, the top total in program history.
  • Anthony has 1,509 career points. He is just the 11th Yellow Jacket to reach 1,500 career points.
  • Anthony has 590 career assists, third on R-MC's all-time list. Anthony is the first player in program history to amass 1,500 career points and 500 assists.
  • Coble had career highs with 18 minutes and six points.
