Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation issued the following announcement on Nov. 24
Gov. Ralph Northam dedicated Piney Grove Flatwoods as Virginia’s 66th natural area preserve on Nov. 23, 2021. The 446 acres of woodlands in Sussex County are home to numerous rare species, including the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker.
Virginia’s newest preserve is part of an extensive conserved landscape encompassing the greater Piney Grove Preserve, Big Woods State Forest and Big Woods Wildlife Management Area. The Nature Conservancy and key agency partners – Department of Conservation and Recreation, Department of Wildlife Resources, Department of Forestry and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service – are working to restore much of this 10,000-acre area to resemble the pre-Colonial forest landscape of southeastern Virginia.
