Stratford Hall recently issued the following announcement.
Lee Family Birthday
January 15, 2022
10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
January was a significant birthday month for the Lee family. On January 20, 1732, Hannah Harrison Ludwell Lee gave birth to one of America’s Founding Fathers; Richard Henry Lee. Richard and his siblings, including another Founding Father, Francis Lightfoot Lee, spent their childhood at Stratford Hall. On January 29, 1756, Lucy Grymes Lee gave birth to another Revolutionary War hero and Stratford resident, Henry “Light Horse Harry” Lee, and on January 19, 1807, Ann Hill Carter Lee gave birth to Robert E. Lee at Stratford, where he spent the first few years of his childhood.
Our new exhibit, Stratford at the Crossroads: Atlantic Cultures & the Creation of America, showcases both the Lee women and the Lee men, and exhibits some of their belongings, such as Hannah Harrison Ludwell Lee’s sewing purse, a christening gown worn by the Lee men, Robert E. Lee’s mechanical pencil, and “Light Horse Harry” Lee’s Order of Society of the Cincinnati badge and ribbon.
During this day of free admission, learn more about the Lee women and men by taking one of our focused tours: The Leading Ladies tour highlights the Lee women, and the Lee men are highlighted in the Band of Brothers audio tour. Both tours feature stories of the four generations who passed through the 18th-century Great House. Be sure to check it out during your visit!
