Randolph-MacOn College Athletics issued the following announcement on Jan. 8
In its return to action, the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team didn't have to try too hard to shake off the cob webs in a triumphant outing against Ferrum on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets remained unbeaten in the ODAC with their defeat of the Panthers, their first game in 28 days.
The Basics
Score: Randolph-Macon 75, Ferrum 45
Venue: Crenshaw Gymnasium
Records: Randolph-Macon 7-3, 5-0 ODAC; Ferrum 4-9, 2-4 ODAC
How It Happened
- If three's company, then the Yellow Jackets had a full house in Crenshaw Gym as they lit up the scoreboard from behind the arc. Sparked by three 3-pointers by Allison Burdette (Fr., Martinsburg, W.Va. / Musselman), RMC hit five triples en route to a 25-12 lead after the first.
- The lead extended to as many as 23 in the first half after Juliana Park (Fr., Fairfax Station, Va. / Davidson Day) hit a pair of 3-pointers herself to give the Lemon and Black a 36-13 lead with 5:24 to go in the half.
- Ferrum was able to generate a little momentum in the third quarter, but the Jackets put a halt to that in the fourth quarter with their largest run of the game. It all started on yet another bonus bomb as Cheridan Hatfield (Sr., Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial) sparked a 16-0 run. The Jackets' defense kept the Panthers off the scoreboard in the fourth quarter until 1:41 left in the game during that time.
- In total, the Lemon and Black hit 12 3-pointers on the day for a new season best. The previous high was 10 which came in an overtime contest with Mary Washington.
- RMC was 12-for-25 behind the arc for mark of 48.0%, also a season best.
- The Jackets dominated the glass from start to finish and outrebounded the Panthers 53-23, their best margin of the season. Catherine Kagey (So., Roanoke, Va. / Faith Christian) almost matched the Panthers in rebounds by herself as she pulled down a career-high 17.
- Even going by offensive rebounds, RMC still outrebounded the Panthers with 25. They directly translated into points as the Jackets had 25 second chance points.
- This was perhaps the most balanced the offense has been all season for the Yellow Jackets. Six players scored in double figures, the most for them all season. Burdette led the way with 15 points. Kagey, Marisa Ziegler (Fr., Forest Hill, Md. / John Carroll), and Park all had 11. Becca Anthony (Sr., Amelia, Va. / Amelia) and Hatfield both had 10.
- Kagey's double-double was her third of the season.
- The Yellow Jackets outscored the Panthers bench 37-0.
- This was also the best the Yellow Jackets have fared from the free throw line this season as they hit 17-of-19 for a mark of 89.5%.
- The Panthers were led by Kayla Cabiness who scored a game-high 24 points. Cameron Hawkins added 17.
The games against Bridgewater and Roanoke have been postponed. As a result the next scheduled game is at Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday, Jan. 19.
