How It Happened (Match 1 vs. Alderson Broaddus)

  • A high powered offense helped Randolph-Macon pull away in the opening set. With the match tied at 6-6, the Yellow Jackets broke away and went on a 14-5 run to take control. Eight of those points were on R-MC kills.
  • Defensively the Yellow Jackets prevented the Battlers from stringing together a run of more than two points for the set. That only took place twice – when the score was 3-1 in favor of AB early on and then again at the end of the set before the Jackets' final point.
  • The second set played closer and was tied as late as 12-all. Scotty Carter (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va. / Frank W. Cox) put the Jackets up for good with a kill which sparked a 9-2 run for a 21-14 lead en route to a 2-0 lead.
  • The Jackets looked poised for the sweep, but the Battlers had other ideas as they scored six of the last seven points to come from behind to stay alive.
  • Trailing 14-11 in the fourth, the Jackets responded well after a timeout and scored four of the next five points to tie the game at 15-all. After teams exchanged the next seven points, R-MC closed out the match with a 7-0 run with kills from Gio DeLuca (So., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen), Kolby Gibson (Jr., Bumpass, Va. / Louisa), and Jarrett Carrano (Jr., Beaverdam, Va. / Patrick Henry).
Inside The Numbers (Match 1 vs. Alderson Broaddus)

  • Carrano had an incredible match as he pounded out a match-high 18 kills, a new career high. He did so on 36 attempts and hit .306 for the match.
  • Carrano was just as effective on defense. He picked up 11 digs for a double-double, and added five blocks up front.
  • Also shining defensively was DeLuca who went up for eight rejections against the Battlers. Overall the Jackets blocked 13 attacks by AB.
  • The first set was one of the best ever for the Jackets offensively. They tallied 13 kills on 17 attempts for a hitting percentage of .765.
  • Cade Terrell (So., Glen Allen, Va. / Deep Run) set up the attack with 35 assist.
How It Happened (Match 2 vs. Eastern Mennonite)

  • A 7-1 rally helped R-MC take advantage of the first set and take a 15-11 lead. After the Royals scored the next two points, the Jackets closed the set with a 10-2 run.
  • The Lemon and Black powered their way to an 8-3 lead to start the second. Alderson Broaddus attempted to come back, but the Jackets were always able to hold them away at arm's length. AB cut the deficit to three at 20-17, but a block by Cunningham and Andrew Klein (Jr., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) followed by kills from Carrano and Carter sealed the 2-0 lead.
  • Another fast start aided the Jackets in the third as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead on a rally capped by an ace from Terrell. The offense was on display again later in the frame as DeLuca, Klein, Terrell and Carrano all scored on consecutive kills to make the score 21-12. Owen Hahn (Fr., Henrico, Va. / Tucker) provided the final touch on a kill to end the match.
Inside The Numbers

  • Klein had an incredible match with 12 kills on 20 attempts for a hitting percentage of .450. He also led the defense on the receiving end with six digs.
  • Overall Randolph-Macon hit .339. On the opposite end, Eastern Mennonite hit just .081. R-MC held all opponents to under .100 hitting for the weekend.
  • Terrell tallied 21 assists in the match.
  • Cunningham added three blocks.
Up Next

Randolph-Macon will be on the road for the next four contests over the next two weekends. First up will be a trip to Eastern where the Jackets will play in a tri along with Cairn on Saturday.
