Anthony, Mallory Lead #1 R-MC Men’s Hoops past WLU

Randolph-MacOn College Athletics issued the following announcement on Jan. 29

Senior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and junior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) each scored 20 points, and Mallory recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds, as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team won 77-72 at Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon in ODAC action.

Records: R-MC 17-1, 9-0 ODAC; WLU 7-9, 5-5 ODAC

How it Happened:

  • Sophomore Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) scored a layup on the first possession of the game to give the Yellow Jackets the early lead. The Generals had the next two buckets before junior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) hit a pair of jumpers to put R-MC up 6-4 three minutes into the contest. After WLU tied it at 6-6, Anthony hit a pair of three-pointers, senior DaQuan Morris (Philadelphia, Pa./Hill School) hit a trey and Talbert had a fastbreak layup to make up an 11-5 run as the Yellow Jackets took a 17-11 lead with 14:35 left in the first half. The Generals had a 7-2 spurt to pull within one at 19-18 before Mallory had a pair of baskets in an 8-3 run as R-MC led 27-21 with 8:25 remaining. After a pair of free throws by WLU, senior David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) hit a foul shot and a follow, Anthony made two from the charity stripe and Morris sank another triple to extend the lead to 12 at 35-23 with 4:25 left. The Generals closed the half on an 8-3 run and trailed 38-31 at intermission. Anthony had 10 points in the first half while Talbert added eight.
  • Anthony hit three-pointers on R-MC's first two possessions of the second half as the Yellow Jackets went up 44-31. After a trey by the Generals, Mallory made two layups to give R-MC a 48-34 lead with 16:50 remaining. After a free throw by WLU, Mallory hit a jumper and two foul shots to make it 52-37 with 14:33 left. The Yellow Jackets led 63-48 before a 13-4 spurt by the Generals made it a six-point game before a layup by Talbert extended the lead to eight at 69-61 with 2:35 remaining. After another bucket by WLU cut the deficit to six, Mallory took a long pass for a layup to make it 73-65 with 2:15 left. Following a basket by the Generals, Anthony, hit a jumper, Morris made a layup and Mallory hit a pair of free throws to extend the lead to a dozen at 77-65 with 44 seconds remaining. WLU scored the final seven points of the game as it finished 77-72.
By The Numbers:

  • The Yellow Jackets had three players score in double figures. Along with 20 by Anthony and Mallory, Talbert finished with 12.
  • Mallory went 8 for 9 from the floor and 4 for 5 from the free throw line.
  • R-MC shot 49% from the floor (31-63). The Yellow Jackets shot 39% from the floor in the first half (15-39) and 67% in the second half (16-24).
  • R-MC had a 35-29 advantage on the glass. Talbert had six rebounds to go along with the 10 by Mallory.
  • Mallory recorded his seventh double-double of the season and the 13th of his career.
  • Mallory had four of R-MC's seven blocked shots.
  • Talbert topped the team with six assists.
For The Record:

  • R-MC extended its win streak to 11.
  • Over the past four seasons, R-MC is 84-7 overall (.923) and 42-2 in ODAC contests (.955).
  • The Yellow Jackets have won five straight and 12 of the past 15 meetings against the Generals.
  • Mallory's four blocks give him 149 for his career, the second-highest total in program history. Pat Holland owns the school record with 174.
  • Anthony had three steals to give him 217 for his career, a program record.
  • Anthony had three assists to give him 673 in his career, the second-highest total in program history and the second-highest total in ODAC history.
  • Anthony had 20 points to give him 1,729 for his career, the fourth-highest total in program history and four points away from the No. 3 spot.
Next Up:

  • R-MC will travel to Randolph on Tuesday, Feb. 1 for a 7 p.m. ODAC contest.
