Randolph-MacOn College Athletics issued the following announcement on Feb. 19

The Randolph-Macon women's tennis team was victorious in its season opener as it went on the road to take down Meredith on Saturday afternoon. The match was close throughout and wasn't decided until the second-to-last singles match completed.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 6, Meredith 3

Venue: Meredith Tennis Complex

Records: Randolph-Macon 1-0, Meredith 1-1

How It Happened

  • The Yellow Jackets were forced to come from behind as the Avenging Angels went up 2-1 after doubles play. The hosts took a 1-0 lead with a win in third doubles before Avery Smith (Sr., Walpole, Mass. / Walpole) and Grace Holderman (Jr., Roanoke, Va. / Cave Spring) knotted up the team score at 1-1 with an 8-2 victory in first doubles. The duo of Matty Grace Gilliam (Fr., Murfreesboro, N.C. / Ridgecroft) and Adele Huffman (So., Granite Falls, N.C. / University Christian) was close to giving the Lemon and Black the lead heading into singles, but fell in an 8-6 nail biter.
  • Holderman was quick to even the team score again once single play started as she took down Ellie Osborne 6-2, 6-1 at second singles to go 2-0 on the day. Gilliam wasn't too far behind with similar scores of 6-2, 6-1 to defeat Summer Elkins for a win at thirds and give the Jackets the lead overall.
  • Huffman made it 4-2 in favor of R-MC with a victory at fourth singles against Claire Southern by scores of 6-3, 6-4. The Avenging Angels were able to cut the deficit back down to one in the team score with a win at sixth singles, but Bailey Willard (Sr., Fredericksburg, Va. / Stafford) secured the victory with a win in fifth singles against Savannah Duduk. It was close as she needed a tiebreaker in the first set with a 7-6 win, but had an easier time in the second with a 6-2 decision.
  • Smith put the finishing touches on the match with a victory over Aly Henneberry at first singles. Both sets were close, but Smith was able to pull out the win on a pair of 6-4 scores.
