No. 2 R-MC Flies By Bridgewater in Women's Hoops Quarterfinals

12

Randolph-MacOn College Athletics issued the following announcement on Feb. 25

The second-seeded Randolph-Macon women's basketball team advanced in the ODAC Tournament as it defeated No. 7 Bridgewater in the quarterfinals on Friday at the Salem Civic Center. The Yellow Jackets never trailed in the contest and led for all but exactly two minutes against the Eagles.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 64, Bridgewater 46

Venue: Salem Civic Center

Records: Randolph-Macon 18-6, Bridgewater 11-15

How It Happened

  • An 11-2 run to close the first quarter created the separation the Yellow Jackets wanted to help execute their game plan similar to their previous two games with Bridgewater. Seniors led the charge in their return to Salem as Becca Anthony (Amelia, Va. / Amelia) opened the lid with a 3-pointer that was followed by layups from both Aimee DeBell (Studley, Va. / St. Gertrude) and Cheridan Hatfield (Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial).
  • After another triple by Anthony to start the frame, the Lemon and Black continued to work the inside of the paint in the second quarter. Catherine Kagey (So., Roanoke, Va. / Faith Christian) was strong underneath and scored three baskets to reach double-digits by the halftime break. The rest of the team followed suit as R-MC was 6-of-11 inside the arc during that stretch and took a 32-19 lead into the locker room.
  • Bridgewater was able to make adjustments at the half and was more effective with its attempts from the field in the third quarter, but Juliana Park (Fr., Fairfax Station, Va. / Davidson Day) started to heat up with eight points in the quarter which helped counterbalance the Eagles' resurgence.
  • Five of them came on back-to-back trips and helped keep BC at arm's length and make the score 45-31 with 1:54 to go in the third. The Eagles wouldn't get closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers

  • The Yellow Jackets controlled the paint and outscored the Eagles by a 34-28 margin. A majority of those markers came in the first half where R-MC had a 24-12 advantage.
  • Forced turnovers and offensive rebounding were particularly important for the Jackets in the first quarter. Five steals directly translated into eight points, while five offensive rebounds turned into an additional six for Randolph-Macon.
  • Randolph-Macon's offense has been balanced all season and tonight was no different. Four starters scored in double figures. All-ODAC First Team selection Catherine Kagey led the way with 14 points as she was an impressive 7-of-10 from the field. She pulled down seven rebounds to fill up her line as well.
  • All-ODAC Second Team Selection wasn't far off as she tossed in 13. Nine of them came on three pointers. Park chipped in 11 with all of them coming in the second half. DeBell equaled her with 11 as well.
  • The Eagles were limited to one player in double-figures as Jaden Alsberry scored a game-high 15 points. She was 7-of-9 from the field.
  • Of the 26 field goals made for the Jackets, 14 of them came on layups.
  • Randolph-Macon's usual rebound margin stayed intact as they held a 43-33 advantage on the glass.
  • Randolph-Macon improved to 19-9 all-time in ODAC Tournament quarterfinal games.
