Bay Transit is returning to pre-COVID operations. Beginning Monday, April 4, fares on demand responsive buses will be $2 per ride and deviated fixed-route bus fare will be fifty cents, the same rates as before the pandemic, despite rising fuel costs and increases in drivers’ salaries. To ease the transition into reinstating fares, Bay Transit any rider who forgets his or her bus fare to board the bus using a one-time free ride voucher. Flyers with a free ride voucher will be available on Bay Transit buses through March. Riders can also buy a book of ten Bay Transit tickets for only $12.00, for a savings of $8 for ten rides.
Bay Transit suspended fare collection in March 2020, as part of a broad array of safety protocols, including eliminating the exchange of money or fare media between drivers and riders, that were implemented to help people to feel safe and comfortable while riding the buses and protect from COVID-19. On every bus, Bay Transit installed plexiglass shields around the bus driver’s seat, premium cabin filtration systems, plexiglass partitions between every passenger seat, cordoned off bus seats, limited ridership to ensure adequate social distancing, regularly cleaned and disinfected the buses, required all bus drivers to wear masks and provided hand sanitizer and/or face masks to any rider who needed them.
Implementing these COVID-19 mitigation best practices enabled Bay Transit to remain in service without interruption for the last two years and ensure buses, drivers and passengers were safe throughout the pandemic, says Bay Transit Director Ken Pollock.
