Former Richmond Spiders forward Nathan Cayo has signed with the Montreal Alliance, an expansion team in the Canadian Elite Basketball League, the club announced Wednesday.
In his final season with the Spiders in 2021-22, Cayo helped lead Richmond to an Atlantic-10 Championship and a spot in the NCAA Tournament. In the first round of the Tournament, Cayo scored 15 points, with 13 coming in the second half and five in the final 1:24 of the game, which helped seal an upset over 5th-seeded Iowa, the Big Ten champion.
During his five seasons at Richmond, Cayo averaged 8.9 points, 1.3 assists and 4.0 rebounds while shooting 55.2 percent from the field in 155 games. Cayo leaves Richmond ranked 25th on UR's career scoring listing with 1,385 points. Cayo is 19th on Richmond's career rebounding list with 613 rebounds and completed his career with the fourth-highest FG pct in Richmond history (55.2). On March 1, 2021, he scored a career-high 25 points vs Saint Joseph's and became the 50th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.
In an Alliance release, Cayo stated, "I am really excited to start playing in front of the fans and to be part of this first season for the Montréal Alliance. I want to thank God for this opportunity to start my professional career in Montréal, the city where I grew up and learned how to play basketball." Cayo is a Montreal native who prepped at College Jean de Brebeuf.
Cayo is the 24th player under head coach Chris Mooney to play professionally.
