Cavaliers Add Guyer-Led “Major League Mindset” to Development Repertoire
Head coach Brian O’Connor announced the addition of Brandon Guyer and his Major League Mindset mental skills training program to the arsenal of developmental tools available to Virginia baseball student-athletes.
Guyer, a 2019 Virginia Baseball Hall of Fame inductee and a seven-year MLB veteran, will implement his revolutionary Major League Mindset program that will be specifically tailored for the Virginia baseball program. Guyer will serve as a player consultant – available to current Cavaliers through virtual and in-person sessions throughout the year. The program is designed to develop mental skills essential for success both on and off the field.
“Brandon is a world class competitor and was truly a selfless leader within our baseball program during his time here and throughout his professional career,” said Brian O’Connor. “We have followed his journey through the professional ranks with a lot of pride and now I am in awe of what he’s done after his playing days as a mental skills coach. We are excited to welcome him back to our locker room and I know that he’s excited to be able to bring his experience and knowledge to help our players.”
Known for its development of student-athletes under O’Connor, the Virginia baseball program has produced a staggering 29 major league baseball players in his 19 seasons at the helm. The Cavaliers have totaled 94 MLB Draft selections since 2004, including 12 first rounders. Mixed with unapparelled on-field success that includes 750 wins (fifth most in the nation since 2004) and the 2015 National Championship, 32 Cavaliers have earned All-America honors and an additional 83 have been All-ACC selections.
“It is a tremendous honor to be back with the UVA baseball family,” said Guyer. Coach O’Connor, coach (Kevin) McMullan, and the rest of the staff are second to none when it comes to the development of players. They’ve turned this program into one of the premier college baseball programs in the country and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity to now come back to the place that helped launch my career. I look forward to being an added resource to these players and empowering them with a mindset that helps them show up at their best on a consistent basis.”
Guyer, a Herndon, Va. native, spent three seasons playing for Virginia (2005-07) before being selected in the fifth round of the 2007 MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs. While at UVA, Guyer was a 2007 First Team All-ACC selection after batting .370 (ninth-best in the ACC) with 19 doubles, eight homers and 50 RBI in his junior year. Over the course of his three seasons, he set the UVA record for career doubles and helped the Cavaliers reach three NCAA Regionals. Guyer made his MLB debut with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2011 and homered in his first big league at bat. He went on to play in the 2016 World Series with the Cleveland Indians and led the majors in hit by pitches in 2015 and 2016.
