ACC Field Hockey Championship Begins Tuesday

Virginia (11-6) begins play at the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Championships on Tuesday, Nov. 1 in a quarterfinal match against Louisville (12-6) at 6 p.m. at Jack Katz Stadium in Durham, N.C.

NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • The Cavaliers began the season ranked No. 12 in the preseason NFHCA Poll and have been ranked as high as No. 5 this year
  • Virginia is No. 1 in strength of schedule this season
  • There is only one team on Virginia’s schedule that has not been ranked this season: today’s opponent Kent State. James Madison and Temple were both unranked when Virginia faced them but both moved into the rankings with JMU coming it at No. 21 and Temple at No. 24. Miami (Ohio) was ranked No. 24 but has slipped out of the top 25
  • The Cavaliers are ranked fifth in RPI heading into the ACC Championship
  • Senior Laura Janssen scored her team-leading 10th goal against Kent State. She ranks fifth in the ACC with 0.59 goals per game and ninth with 1.29 points per game
  • Janssen has 31 career goals, the highest tally of anyone on the team
  • Grad student Annie McDonough scored her first goal of the season against Kent State, becoming the 11th player to score a goal this season. It was also a game-winner, making her the eighth different Cavalier to notch a game-winner
  • McDonough leads the team with five assists
  • Freshman midfielder Daniela Mendez-Trendler is second on the team with eight goals and 19 points. She scored six of those goals in a six-game span between Sept. 18 (Saint Joseph’s) and Oct. 9 (Miami)
  • Mendez-Trendler was the ACC Offensive Player of the Week and Synapse Sports National Rookie of the Week after scoring both goals in the win against Louisville and the game-winner against William & Mary
  • Sophomore Noa Boterman is third on the team in goals with five, matching her output from her rookie season
  • Freshman goalkeeper Jet Trimborn ranks second in the ACC and sixth in the nation with a 1.06 goals-against average
  • Trimborn is a two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Week who has logged four shutouts this season in her 11 games
  • Trimborn was subbed into the Boston College game mid-contest and has been the Cavaliers’ goalkeeper since
VIRGINIA IN THE ACC CHAMPIONSHIP

  • The Cavaliers finished in a three-way tie for third place in the ACC with Boston College and Syracuse and earned the No. 3 seed via goal differential
  • The winner of Tuesday’s game will play the winner of Duke and Wake Forest on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 3:30 p.m.
  • The Championship match will take place on Friday, Nov. 4 at 2 p.m.
  • Virginia is looking for its second ACC title. The team won its first championship in 2016. That year, UVA was the six seed in the tournament, becoming the lowest-ever seed to win the ACC Field Hockey Championship
  • UVA has made the semifinals each of the last seven years, including 2017 when the team was the tournament’s No. 1 seed
  • Last year, the Cavaliers advanced to the ACC final, falling 1-0 to North Carolina. Erin Matson scored on the Tar Heels only shot on goal of the game
