Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department Inc.’s history!

Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department Inc.’s history!

The Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department was organized on February 15, 1932. Carroll Saunders was elected as its first chief. I don't know where their first fire house was located. They held their first carnival August 8 to August 17, 1935. It was held on a lot on Waverly Ave. across the street from the town parking lot. The carnival later moved to the lot where Tri Star now stands and I believe it was in the early 1950s when it was moved to its present location on Waverly Ave.

In January 1939 the construction of the fire house on East Church St. was completed. The picture of the architects rendering of the building is from the front page of the January 19, 1939 Rappahannock Record. The color postcard of the fire house was taken some time prior to the 1952 fire. The brick building to the left of the fire house was destroyed in the fire. Where you see the window and the bicycle was Stokley Winegar's business. The other color photo is how the building looks today. Construction of the present fire house on School St. began in August 1975, and on July 5, 1976 the building was dedicated and declared officially opened and in service
