Women's Hoops Leads Wire-to-Wire in Win Over Va. Wesleyan

The Randolph-Macon women's basketball team hosted Virginia Wesleyan in Crenshaw Gym for their conference home opener on Wednesday night. The Yellow Jackets won their third straight game after a 58-44 victory over the Marlins.

The Basics:

Score: Randolph-Macon 58, Virginia Wesleyan 44

Location/Venue: Ashland, Va./Randolph-Macon College/Crenshaw Gym

Records: Randolph-Macon (3-3, 1-0 ODAC), Virginia Wesleyan (4-3, 1-2 ODAC)

How it Happened:

  • Randolph-Macon's offense opened the game on a mission as Jane Elkins (Annandale, Va./Bishop Ireton) took over the first quarter with 10 points as a part of R-MC's 26-point frame, leading by 20 after 10 minutes.
  • Virginia Wesleyan countered in the second quarter, as they outscored R-MC by three in the quarter, but the Yellow Jackets still held a 17-point advantage at the intermission.
  • VWU found its way back into the game, as R-MC shot just 3-17 in the third quarter, but still led by nine after three quarters.
  • VWU cut the lead to three early in the fourth, but Marisa Ziegler (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) led the way with five points, and Haley Pasqualone (Purcellville, Va./Loudon Valley) knocked down a three pointer in the fourth quarter as R-MC extended the lead to comfortably secure the win.
By the Numbers:

  • Elkins posted 12 points and seven rebounds, and Ziegler had 11 points off the bench as the only two players in double figures for R-MC on the night.
  • Pasqualone hit a trio or threes including the big one in the fourth quarter as part of her nine points off the bench.
  • R-MC shot 9-23 (39%) from beyond the arc, which is the most triples they've made in a game so far this season, and the highest percentage from long range in a game this year.
  • Cheridan Hatfield (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial) filled the stat sheet with six points, two rebounds, three assists, and four steals.
  • Paige Anderson (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) corralled nine rebounds and added a block, proving to be a force on the inside.
