Women's Hoops Falls to Randolph in Defensive Battle

Women's Hoops Falls to Randolph in Defensive Battle

The Randolph-Macon women's basketball team met the Randolph WildCats on the road in Lynchburg on Wednesday night to continue conference play. The WildCats prevailed in a defensive battle, 50-43.

The Basics:

Score: Randolph 50, Randolph-Macon 43

Location/Venue: Lynchburg, Va./Randolph College/Michels Athletic Center

Records: Randolph (7-2, 4-1 ODAC), Randolph-Macon (4-4, 2-1 ODAC)

How it Happened:

  • Randolph-Macon's offense sputtered in the first frame, falling behind early, as Randolph pushed out to a 12-point advantage after 10 minutes.
  • R-MC wasn't out of it though, beginning their comeback effort in the second quarter, holding the WildCats to just eight points as the Yellow Jackets were able to cut down the lead but still trailed at the half.
  • The third quarter went even more in R-MC's favor, as they were able to get to the free throw line, shooting 8-12 from the charity stripe in the quarter and were able to scrape six more points off the lead, trailing by just four heading into the fourth.
  • The fourth quarter was the opposite, as Randolph went 8-8 from the free throw line and R-MC did not get to the line. The Yellow Jackets shot 50% in the quarter, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback.
By the Numbers:

  • R-MC had two players in double-figures. Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) posted a double-double with 15 points and10 rebounds, with three assists and three steals to add to the stat line, and Jane Elkins (Annandale, Va./Bishop Ireton) posted 17 points and six rebounds.
  • Elkins went 7-10 from the free throw line as R-MC shot 8-12 from the stripe in the game.
  • The Yellow Jackets defense was stellar, holding Randolph to just 28% shooting in the game.
  • R-MC also won the battle on the boards, outrebounding Randolph 41-33 overall and 11-9 on the offensive glass. Paige Anderson (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) added seven rebounds and Cheridan Hatfield (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial) added six.
